Accidenti ragazzi, anche se in ritardo come posso non dare notizia della nascita di un porting ufficiale della mia amata Slackware per l’architettura di processori a 64 bit… il 20 maggio 2009 Patrick Volkerding ha annunciato l’uscita in pubblico del ramo -current per x86_64, che procederà di pari passo con la -current a 32bit (x86).

Questo è un estratto dal ChangeLog della -current del 20 maggio 2009:

Ready or not, Slackware has now gone 64-bit with an official x86_64 port being maintained in-sync with the regular x86 -current branch. DVDs will be available for purchase from the Slackware store when Slackware 13.0 is released. Many thanks go out to the Slackware team for their help with this branch and a special thank you to Eric Hameleers who did the real heavy lifting re-compiling everything for this architecture, testing, re-testing, and staying in-sync with -current.

We’ve been developing and testing Slackware64 for quite a while. Most of the team is already using Slackware64 on their personal machines, and things are working well enough that it is time to let the community check our work.

We’d like to thank the unofficial 64 bit projects for taking up the slack for us for so long so that we could take our time getting everything just right. Without those alternatives, we would have been pressured to get things out before they were really ready.

Finalmente la più longeva distribuzione Linux attualmente in produzione ha deciso di abbracciare quella che sarà l’architettura dei prossimi anni.

Un doveroso ringraziamento va a Patrick, ad Eric “Alien Bob” Hameleers e a tutto il team Slackware per il grandioso lavoro che hanno fatto, stanno facendo e faranno, Questa distro non sarebbe la migliore senza l’apporto di tutte queste persone magnifiche…

Vi invito a provare la versione a 64bit e a riportare eventuali problemi direttamente al team di sviluppo, oppure ne potete discutere sul forum di Slacky.eu, dove troverete sicuramente l’aiuto di cui avete bisogno…

Per quanto mi riguarda aspetterò l’uscita della 13.0 stabile e poi deciderò se passare al ramo a 64bit sul mio laptop o se continuare per la strada dei 32bit ancora per un po’…
